Koeman wants Aston Villa job

Former Ajax boss Ronald Koeman is interested in taking over at Aston Villa after claiming the club contacted his agent last week. Villa are yet to name Martin O'Neill's successor with Kevin MacDonald currently occupying the role on a caretaker basis. Various names have been linked with the job and Koeman has thrown his hat into the ring.

"Yes, of course I am interested to listen to everybody. The Premier League is a very strong competition and I'm interested in that, yes," he said. "There was a contact with my agent but nothing more than that, about one week ago or something. "Until now I didn't know anything about that. If they are interested they can call me."

Asked whether his lack of experience in England could be a factor, the Dutchman told Five Live Sport: "If they think they are looking for a manager with Premier League experience then of course I cannot come, because I have not worked in England before.

"I have enough experience but not in English football. "I think I would do a good job, I think I have enough experience in the last 10 years after working in Holland, where I was league champion, and working in Portugal, Spain...in that case my experience is enough." Aston Villa deny Heskey exit talk

Aston Villa have dismissed reports they have held talks with Leicester regarding a possible transfer of striker Emile Heskey to the Walkers Stadium. The former England player made his initial reputation with the Foxes before signing for Liverpool a decade ago.

Now there has been speculation that a return to his first club is a possibility, but Villa caretaker boss Kevin MacDonald said: "I worked with Emile as a young boy at Leicester and I've got a lot of time for him. I've not had any talks with Leicester." He added: "I live quite close to Leicester so I know quite a few of the people there and there has been nothing at all.

"I think Emile Heskey is a very, very good footballer. You don't play as often as he did for England if you are not a good player." MacDonald hinted that Heskey still has an important role to play at Villa. He said: "In my opinion, he has been a top player for a long time. You don't play for Liverpool and win trophies if you are not a good player. "Aston Villa need as many good players as they can and then to develop some other ones as well." O'Neill defends Heskey decision

Martin O'Neill insists he put no pressure on Aston Villa striker Emile Heskey to end his England career.

But the Villa boss believes Heskey, 32, will reap the benefits of having the international breaks to rest up following his decision to quit England after a disappointing World Cup campaign in South Africa.

"No-one at the football club forced Emile to retire from international football," said O'Neill.

"That was a decision he made all on his own. He feels now that international football is something he can do without.

"There are weeks when you've got the international breaks that you can rest. In that sense he will see that there is a benefit.

"But international football shouldn't really have any effect on your club form - apart from not getting a break."

Heskey will face a battle for his place at Villa despite O'Neill not recruiting any new strikers so far this summer.

England Under-19 player Nathan Delfouneso is expected to make a bigger challenge for a spot this season.

O'Neill said: "I don't think there will be too many players at the club who can complain about not getting chances to play.

"When you get them, you've got to grasp them. We've got Emile, John Carew, Gabriel Agbonlahor, Nathan Delfouneso and young Andreas Weimann who I think has got a chance." Villa boss wants right price for Milner

Aston Villa boss Martin O'Neill will allow James Milner to leave the club for Manchester City if they meet the asking price for the England midfielder.

Milner told O'Neill before the World Cup, where he started three of England's four games, that he wanted to leave the club he joined for a reported £12million from Newcastle two years ago. City had a bid of around £20million rejected in May for the 24-year-old and Villa are believed to be looking for a figure in the region of £30million.

O'Neill, who revealed he has not spoken to Milner since before he left for the World Cup, told www.avfc.co.uk: "The state of affairs is really straightforward. James and his agent came to see us before the World Cup and intimated that they would like to go."

He added: "Then Manchester City made the offer, which we told them about. There is a difference of valuation at this moment between the buying club and the selling club. That may well be resolved and if that is the case then absolutely fine.

"I think James' agent has told our chief executive that he wouldn't be signing a new contract. Obviously that puts a different slant on things, like everything else.

"If a fee is agreed, at the end of the day, the player can leave." Petrov backs ONeill transfer policy

Aston Villa captain Stiliyan Petrov has backed Martin O'Neill to strengthen the squad despite another slow start to the summer transfer window. O'Neill has yet to capture his first signing of the summer, but it is not unusual for the Northern Irishman at this stage and Petrov is sure there is no need to panick. "I don't think it's a problem because, as we all know, our boss will be doing everything in the last three or four days!" said Petrov. "I am sure the manager and the chairman, who was down at the training ground last week, are working hard on getting new players in.

"And I am certain they are going to strengthen before the season starts because both men have great ambitions for Villa. "They want to take this club even further and that's why there will definitely be new signings coming in. "And if the boss brings in the same sort of quality he did this time last year - with (Richard) Dunne, (James) Collins and (Stephen) Warnock - then we will all be very happy. "The impact they had on our team was huge. If we can get that sort of player in again we'll be very pleased."

Downing critical of Capello

Stewart Downing has hit out at England manager Fabio Capello for leaving him out of his World Cup squad without explanation. The Aston Villa winger's hopes of making the trip to South Africa had been in doubt after he missed the start of last season as he recovered from a broken ankle and then struggled to recapture his best form, scoring just three goals in all competitions.Downing did not even make Capello's initial 30-man squad for the tournament but the 26-year-old was still left disappointed with the manner of his omission. He was quoted in The Sun as saying: "A lot of people who had not played were in the squad as were people out of form - but others were left out."It was a little strange and I was very disappointed as I thought, maybe, I had a chance to get in the 30 at least."He obviously has his reasons why but the disappointing thing was I didn't get told why I wasn't in the squad. That's his choice and there's no point in moaning about it now."

Warnock doubt for final

Aston Villa left-back Stephen Warnock could be a doubt for the Carling Cup final after being advised to rest his shin problem for at least a further fortnight.Warnock has missed Villa's last two Barclays Premier League games with Arsenal and Fulham after being substituted early in the second half of the FA Cup clash with Brighton on January 23.Now he will have to rest up for a further two weeks, after seeing a specialist, before a further assessment is made.Villa will meet Manchester United in the final at Wembley on February 28 - barely a week after Warnock is checked out again.Villa boss Martin O'Neill said: "Stephen will have to rest for a while. We will have a look and see how he is in a couple of weeks. That is what the specialist has said."We will have to see if it will settle down. Obviously, he's desperate to be playing. It's disappointing because he's been brilliant for us."

O'Neill expects Heskey stay

Aston Villa manager Martin O'Neill has again insisted that he has no plans to sell England striker Emile Heskey in the January transfer window.

The 31-year-old has been linked with a number of other Premier League sides, including former club Liverpool, but O'Neill is not set to agree to any deal.

He said: "I don't know why Emile Heskey's name has been brought up, but January's a long time.

"I wouldn't really want to sell players at the football club and that would really be it, but I wouldn't have a clue what might happen in January at this stage."

Meanwhile, O'Neill praised both Nathan Delfouneso and Fabian Delph for their performances in the 3-1 FA Cup third round win over Blackburn Rovers.

He added: "Nathan started very brightly and got the goal he was capable of. There's much more to come from him.

"I don't see why Delfouneso should not be the fourth striker in our squad. I think he's got a really good future.

"I thought Delph's first-half performance was excellent. I wouldn't have given him a chance of playing last night, because he's been ill for the last two days.

"He declared himself fit and wanted to play. He wasn't too well at half-time but I thought his contribution was excellent." Villa boss vows to fight back

Aston Villa boss Martin O'Neill has backed his side to bounce back from Tuesday's heartbreaking home defeat to Liverpool.

Villa have endured a difficult festive period having lost 3-0 at Arsenal on Sunday before being undone by Fernando Torres' last-gasp goal at Villa Park just over 48 hours later.

However, an upbeat O'Neill said: "We will fight back - make no mistake. It's a blow to us but in terms of confidence-shaking - absolutely not. Steadfast, we will go again. We will start again on Saturday.

"It was a cruel defeat, we shouldn't have been beaten, we should have won the game. I think everyone in the stadium and on the TV would have said that.

"We should have won the game and we didn't do and we will have to pick ourselves up and we are capable of doing that.

"Their goalkeeper has made two incredible saves. How he kept out Downing's volley in the first half I will never know.

"We haven't had to deal with too much during the course of the game. By the time they scored we should have been home and dry.

"I'm disappointed - In three or four days people will forget the nature of the game and just look at the statistics."
