Aston Villa 1 Stoke City 0- ONeill throws down gauntlet to fringe players

At the end of the most satisfying week of his reign, Martin O'Neill threw down a challenge. After claiming this was the club's 'best win of the season so far', he put his squad on red alert.

So O'Neill is asking his fringe players to step up, the likes of Nigel Reo-Coker, Steve Sidwell, Fabian Delph and James Collins.
'I have some really good players sitting there waiting for their chance,' he said. 'Those chances will undoubtedly come along . . . and pretty soon.
'The players in the team don't want to rest up. Ask James Milner if he wants to sit it out and you'd get one reply.
'Whether I will change it next week, I don't know, but chances will come.'
No complacency: Villa boss Martin O'Neill

The only goal came after 61 minutes when substitute John Carew on early for Emile Heskey, who will have a scan today on a groin strain headed in an Ashley Young cross. But Carew's celebrations went wrong.
The striker kicked the corner flag and it flew into the crowd, brushing against seven-year-old Sam Clements, who was wearing a Superman T-shirt with Carew's name on the back.
Carew immediately checked on the youngster's wellbeing and at full time gave the lad his shirt. Sam said: 'He's my favourite player. When he came over I couldn't believe it he has made my Christmas.'
Stoke boss Tony Pulis can take heart from this display. He was understandably angry when Mamady Sidibe's header was ruled out for a push on Stephen Warnock.

This team looks to have improved immeasurably since their last visit to Villa Park just nine months ago and goalkeeper Thomas Sorensen added: 'I think our problem is not taking our chances. We were probably the better team, defended ever so well, put pressure on them and I thought maybe just before they scored, they were feeling real frustration.

'That is sometimes the difference between the top sides and the mid-table teams. When you are on top, you have to make it count.' For upcoming matches ticket4football.com provides football fans with the facility to get Aston Villa Tickets and football tickets for other soccer events online.

Agent: Carew going nowhere

Aston Villa striker John Carew is not heading for the Aston Villa exit door in January, according to his agent.

The 30-year-old Norway international has been linked with a move back to Turkish football with Fenerbahce.

However, agent Per Flod, claims his client is happy at Villa and is interested in extending his contract.

Carew is a regular starter for the Midlands club and has netted four goals in 16 first-team appearances for Martin O'Neill's side this season.

"Something will happen during the summer of 2010, either an extension or a transfer," revealed Flod.

"John might also play out his contract, but I don't think Villa are interested in that.

"It's no news that Fenerbahce wants John. That has been known for three years now."

Carew joined the Midlands club in January 2007 from Lyon and has scored 32 goals in 95 appearances in all competitions.

O'Neill upbeat over Davies

Aston Villa boss Martin O'Neill has rubbished reports which suggested that defender Curtis Davies had suffered a setback in his recovery from shoulder surgery.

Davies, 24, was sent for an operation on a long-running problem in September which was scheduled to keep him on the sidelines for four months.

But despite suggestions that Davies' rehabilitation had not gone to plan, O'Neill claims that he still expects the former West Bromwich Albion stopper to still be back in action as planned in the new year.

"Contrary to what was reported last week, there have been no setbacks or anything like that regarding Curtis," he explained.

"In fact, he is doing very well. We will wait for the specialist report, which will be coming in very shortly.

"But the time frame was always around about 16 weeks from when Curtis had the operation.

"It is one of those injuries where you wouldn't be tempted to rush anyone back beforehand but Curtis is doing very well."

Aston Villa 3 Hull City 0- Bullard injury another serious blow for Tigers

James Milner and Jimmy Bullard both began this World Cup season with high hopes but Aston Villa's man of the match was the only one still dreaming of South Africa after an afternoon of triumph and heartache, at Villa Park.

Milner had already created the opening goal for Richard Dunne when a clumsy collision left Bullard in a heap and minutes later the Hull midfielder went off in tears after what looked like another serious knee injury, this time on his left side.

It was a desperately sad sight and Milner's splendid goal, after a rush of blood by Hull keeper Matt Duke, could not erase the heart-rending image of Bullard's exit a week after he delighted the nation with a cheeky goal celebration which aped his boss, Phil Brown.
